Setting drift bands that survive a noisy week
How we choose upper and lower weight bands so a normal week of price moves does not force a full rebalance every Friday.
A target weight without a band is a trap. Prices move; your book will leave the exact percentage almost immediately. In planning sessions we spend as much time on bands as on the targets themselves.
Start from behaviour, not from a formula
Ask what would actually make you act. If a 1% drift already feels urgent, the band is too tight for a volatile coin. If you can tolerate a 6% swing on a satellite sleeve before you care, write that down — that is the band.
Separate core and satellite
Core holdings often use tighter bands (for example ±2 to ±3 percentage points). Satellite coins can breathe wider so you are not constantly trimming dust. Smart Crypto Calculator PC will show the current weight; your sheet should say whether that weight is still “inside” or “outside.”
Tie bands to cash
If rebalancing requires selling into a thin cash buffer, widen the band until you rebuild cash, or schedule a partial rebalance only. Bands that ignore living-cost cash create forced sales at bad moments.
Review cadence
Bands are not permanent. Life expenses, new lockups, or a large deposit should trigger a band review even if the calendar says “wait until quarter-end.”
